The Part-Time CTO

A Chief Technology Officer (CTO) straddles six different disciplines: invention, engineering, communications, intellectual property, system requirements (regulatory, etc.), and project management. Often tech startups question whether or not they really need a CTO. Perhaps the answer is a part-time CTO when you consider that startups tend to:
Spend too much money
Raise money with unfavorable terms
Give up too much equity
Reach the market too slowly – and without adequate testing
Leave themselves vulnerable to competition

Most technology organizations really need an experienced CTO to help them navigate these issues, but a large percentage really don’t need and/or can’t afford one on a full time or permanent basis. It’s cheaper than hiring full-time workers and also faster than developing the talent in-house.
